Kutchan Japan, Home to Niseko Ski Resort – What Happens During the Off Season?

On the island of Hokkaido sits a beautiful community named Kutchan. Kutchan Japan rests in the area of the great Japanese Alps and is home to the rapidly growing Niseko Ski Resort. But what do the locals and the visitors do when the snow melts and winter gives way to the warmer seasons?

As winter gives way to spring, the snows melt and spring blossoms dotting the mountains and foothills with the majestical view of cherry blossoms and strawberry fields in every direction.

The construction and improvements of various roads, buildings and resorts that come to a halt in the winter months, begin once again, and cultural classes are held island wide. Cultural classes happen for a variety of reasons, the primary one being helping the local people become more aware of the traditions and languages of their ever increasing foreign visitors. The Japanese people have always been a warm and welcoming people. Their desire to learn more about their visitors in an effort to make them feel more at home when they are guests on the island is just more proof of that.

While the warmer months continue to approach, it is not all work and no play. Although currently domestic visitors make up the majority of warm weather vacationers, foreign visitors are quickly learning there are many fabulous things to do to keep everyone happy.

Summer and autumn in the Japanese Alps bring with them incredible beauty as the area transforms to the rich and aromatic smells and colours of summery green. Back country hiking, rafting over the Shiribetsu River, kayaking, canoeing and of course surfing are quickly gaining the attention of Australia’s out door enthusiasts.

World-class golf courses and fantastic salt-water and fresh water fishing opportunities have also caught the attention of not only the Australian, but the American’s as well. It will not be long before Niseko and the island of Hokkaido is just as popular with tourists in the warmer months as it is during ski season.

Visitors during Autumn will be mesmerized as the colours once again transform the landscape. Autumn golds, yellows, reds, oranges and browns cannot be adequately described with mere words. One truly needs to experience it to capture the essence of the changing seasons.

Regardless of what time of year you decide to visit for the first time, you can guarantee it will be just the first visit. This mystical land will leave you yearning to explore more and more of it with each passing season.
